THE ART OF WINNING SOULSÂ
Scripture Reading: John 1:44-48
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” Philip replied.
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
Soul winning is a divine partnership. It is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor but a Spirit-led art. Because every person is uniquely crafted by God, with different backgrounds, questions, and temperaments, we need the Holy Spirit’s wisdom to guide our approach.
Consider the encounter between Jesus and Nathanael. Nathanael’s initial skepticism is clear: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” He was a man of pride and intellect, quick to judge. Yet, look at how Jesus masterfully disarms him.
When Nathanael approaches, Jesus doesn’t confront his prejudice or highlight his pride. Instead, He offers a profound and affirming declaration: “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”
This is fascinating. The word “guile” means deceit, cunning, or craftiness. Was Nathanael truly without it? Moments before, he was casting a cynical judgment. But Jesus, in His wisdom, saw beyond the surface to the sincere seeker of truth within. He chose to call out Nathanael’s potential, not his flaws. He appealed to the man’s deepest identity as a true “Israelite,” winning his trust and opening his heart.
This is our model. We are called to be smart in soul winning—to partner with the Holy Spirit to find the right “key” for each person He brings across our path. It’s not about employing clever formulas, but about being sensitive enough to see the person as God sees them, and speaking the truth in a way that connects with their heart.
The next time you have an opportunity to share your faith, pause and listen. Ask the Spirit for wisdom. Is this person a skeptic who needs an invitation to “come and see” like Philip offered? Or are they, like Nathanael, someone who needs a word of affirmation that reveals Christ’s personal knowledge and love for them? Be led. Be wise. Be effective.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you that your Holy Spirit lives in me. I receive your divine wisdom today—the insight and discernment to connect with every heart you place in my path. I am a wise and effective witness, guided by your love to speak the right word at the right time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
